LiDAR was engineered to measure structures. Okoshi Madoka turns it toward people and cityscapes. The resulting point-cloud data is reconstructed in AR and summoned into contexts other than where it was captured—the measurement of distance becoming the generation of image. Surface Drawing does not document the moment reality converts to data. It attends to the perceptual displacement that occurs when that converted reality re-emerges as space.

Artist Statement

LiDAR was developed to measure the dimensions of buildings and structures. Okoshi Madoka turns it toward people and cityscapes. When this technology migrated from dedicated surveying equipment into the iPhone, the act of measurement became continuous with everyday gesture. Okoshi works at that junction.

Point-cloud data captured in one place is detached from its original context and reconstructed in AR space, summoned back into the world as a space distinct from where it was taken. Measurement generates image; image becomes space. What is at stake across this sequence is not the technical fidelity of digital conversion, but the perceptual displacement that occurs when converted reality re-emerges as space in its own right.

Surface Drawing illuminates the conditions under which images arise in an era when seeing and measuring have become inextricable. Data does not record reality. Data summons reality as a different reality. Okoshi's practice is a sustained inquiry into the structure of that summoning.

Biography

Oikoshi Madoka uses the LiDAR sensor built into the smartphone to capture people and cityscapes as point-cloud data, reconstructing them within AR space. Measurement generates image; image becomes space. Working across this sequence, she sustains an inquiry into where seeing ends and measuring begins. Born in Akita Prefecture in 1997. BFA, Akita University of Art, 2020. MFA, Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences (IAMAS), 2023. Currently a doctoral candidate at Nagoya University, Graduate School of Informatics.
