An empty stroller sits at the table of a reunion. A drink is set before each one, while the single figure who appears in the painting is cut off at the face. At upper left, a box-like form emerging from shadow first reads as the presence of a person. But it too is an empty stroller. The moment you realize that what you took for a person is an empty vessel, you become abruptly aware of yourself—of having built meaning out of brushwork and shadow on the surface. Reunion paints what is not there, and for a brief moment makes you conscious of what it is to see.
