seeing the invisible
KUWASAKO Kana
aaploit presents seeing the invisible, a solo exhibition by Kuwasako Kana, on view from December 3 through December 18, 2022. Kuwasako creates work by embroidering onto photographic supports. The new series seeing the invisible was shown in Hokkaido in April and Nagoya in October; this exhibition is the traveling presentation.
The subject of seeing the invisible is a scene Kuwasako found in a forest after the leaves had fallen. Countless branches take complex forms—so fine and intricate that tracing any single branch is nearly impossible.
What lies between vision and sensation, or memory? Seeing, having seen, remembering what was seen. Using a photograph as support, she embroiders.
What the embroidery traces is the artist's viewpoint—a log, and also the presentation of one way of seeing. To follow the artist's perspective, or to trace the work with a different one: this is the viewing experience the work offers.
seeing the invisible: countless black lines run across a white surface. Thick lines, thin lines—crossing, curving, forming loops. Embroidery thread gives color to portions of the black lines. Colors emerge within the monochrome surface; as the eye follows them, one is drawn into the black lines behind.
The artist uses photography as a support in order to establish a shared point of reference with the viewer. The embroidery, she says, records the artist's gaze. We invite you to trace the scene Kuwasako is seeing.
