ISHIMARU Keita
aaploit presents free hand, a solo exhibition by Ishimaru Keita, on view from January 20 through February 5, 2023. This exhibition is a traveling presentation of the exhibition of the same name held at PHOTO GALLERY FLOW NAGOYA in July 2022. Additional works produced since the Nagoya showing are included.
Ishimaru is based in Saga City. After completing his graduate studies at Saga University in 2022, he co-founded and operates Two Bounce, an art space in the city. Two Bounce serves as a venue for emerging artists, including students, to present and exchange work. Ishimaru actively exhibits his own work while maintaining perspectives as both artist and organizer.
Strolling Dot is presented alongside a video work. A form inside a petri dish and its relationship to the video are suggested, but the ambiguity of the connection will likely unsettle the viewer. The video depicts scenes from daily life, but a dot floats within it. The floating dot carries an unsettling atmosphere, yet when its form appears, a strange resonance and empathy emerge—the kind of feeling that might arise when, walking through an unfamiliar town, you come across a trace of something familiar.
touch #4 comprises multiple frames and a video work. The frames appear blank at first glance, but each holds a single color, and they are arranged in sequence. The video depicts a still life—a traditional painting motif—but then a paintbrush appears. Paint is being applied to an acrylic panel placed in front of the motif. The applied paint appears as traces in the frames. This work, which shows the construction of a painting and its traces, makes one inevitably conscious of time.
