Reality
HARUNA Maho
aaploit presents Reality, a solo exhibition by Haruna Maho, on view from October 19 through November 3, 2024. Following last year's Walking Straight, this is Haruna's second solo exhibition at aaploit. The exhibition centers on new works born from Haruna's distinctive production process.
Haruna takes a singular approach to painting. She devotes herself entirely to the act of painting itself, striving to forget everything beyond her own existence in that moment. This attitude resembles the practice of zazen, in which consciousness is directed solely toward breathing.
Her works are produced in a state released from preconceptions and fixed ideas. Haruna does not predetermine the final form or meaning of a painting; she builds the picture plane as it unfolds. Working not only with brushes but also by applying paint directly from the tube, using her feet, and employing various tools and pigments, she constructs each surface. Her works take unpredictable turns, stimulating the viewer's imagination.
Haruna describes her process as "painting something that could become anything." These words suggest the open possibilities her works hold. Through Haruna's work, viewers may experience a new "reality" unbound by fixed ideas.
This exhibition offers an opportunity to reconsider the everyday landscapes and concepts we take for granted, from a fresh perspective.
