Boundaries of Gaze
AKIBA Kohei
aaploit presents Boundaries of Gaze, a solo exhibition by Akiba Kohei, who has built an international reputation through exhibitions in Paris, New York, and Tokyo.
The key visual of this exhibition is characterized by intense brushwork in red lines that at first glance appears abstract. Yet the image suggested by the title—a woman waving—gradually emerges in the viewer's consciousness, ceaselessly oscillating between figuration and abstraction. The picture plane, in which fierce brushstrokes and delicate emotional expression converge, represents a distinctive world of expression that Akiba has arrived at through his accumulated experience.
Since his debut in 2012, Akiba has pursued an energetic practice of production and exhibition both in Japan and abroad. In his body of work, including self-portraits, he has consistently sought an intensity of expression that reflects the artist's very existence. Through presentations in Paris and New York, his expression reaches deeply across borders. The vigorous traces left on the surface appear as if the artist's inner voice has taken physical form. His self-portraits are not mere records of the self but a sustained inquiry into the certainty of being.
We invite you to experience the world of Akiba Kohei, who questions the boundary between figuration and abstraction, and the essence of seeing itself.
