Opening Exhibition

An opening exhibition as preparation for opening.

What does it take to open a gallery? aaploit is an art gallery dealing in contemporary art, opening in the Suidō area of Bunkyō-ku (nearest station: Edogawabashi on the Yūrakuchō Line). For those outside the art world, a gallery is likely a place with a very high threshold. It is a place to encounter and purchase art, yet it differs from ordinary retail. One reason may be that visits without purchase carry meaning—because it is also a place for viewing and experiencing work.

aaploit does not aim to lower the gallery's threshold. There is a desire to see a world in which anyone can encounter and engage with art, but viewers also need a certain preparation to enjoy it.

aaploit plans to open in early summer 2022. This opening exhibition unfolds the process of launching aaploit—the preparation for opening—in digital space. Activities related to interior construction, leasing the property, selecting and installing equipment and furnishings will be shared on social media. A physical space exists, but during the WIP exhibition period, visitors cannot enter the gallery.

The title WIP stands for Work In Progress—meaning something under construction, or work-in-process. As something still in progress, it is recognized as having no exchange value, since it cannot yet be sold on its own. In accounting, work-in-process is classified as a current liability. The term appears beyond manufacturing and accounting as well—for example, appended to the filename of a presentation still being drafted, so it is not accidentally sent to a client.

The role and destination of this space are also in process. The exhibition unfolds across Twitter, Instagram / Facebook, and Discord. These will accumulate on the gallery's accounts. Viewers engage at whatever timing they choose, from whatever touchpoint they prefer. They can participate in dialogue through comments, retweets, and likes.

Details of this gallery opening are scheduled for publication in the magazine REBOOT, to be issued around summer.

The start date is Unknown because it is no longer possible to determine when aaploit's preparation began. The final day marks the completion of gallery preparation—the day of completion, but also the end of the exhibition. On that one day alone, this exhibition opens.
