I make places for escaping and resisting the absurd passage of time that runs through everyday life — and places for holding a comfortable flow in place.
I am drawn to incorporating devices and text into my works. As a recurring device, I create a state in which an imaginary shadow is set against something that actually exists, and the imaginary shadow comes to take precedence over the real.
The whites in my paintings are drawn almost entirely with something like paper clay dried into stone. The act of rubbing this against a surface — like drawing with pumice on the ground — feels as though it returns me to a purer state of mind from long ago.
