Haruna Maho is an abstract artist pursuing her unique philosophy and methodology in painting. While her expression evokes Art Informel and embodies the physical action reminiscent of the Gutai Art Association, it presents a more contemporary aspect through her distinctive lightness and sense of liberation.

Haruna’s creative process resembles Zen practice. Just as zazen meditation focuses solely on breathing, she devotes her entire being to “the act of painting” itself. This approach allows her to create works free from preconceptions and fixed ideas. She describes her creative work as “painting something that can become anything (air).” This indicates not merely an expression on canvas but the process wherein each stroke, touch, and line itself becomes a painting unfolding within a spatial expanse.

Haruna’s technique inherits the experimental spirit of mid-20th century art that pursued the materiality and physicality of painting while achieving a more free and light contemporary sensibility. She constructs her canvas using various methods—not only brushes but also applying paint directly from tubes or using her feet—yet her work exudes a sense of liberation rather than heaviness.
